BSP Newsletter No. 2000:1:p40a Baltic 21 - Sustainable Fisheries
The very first information about the conference "On the Threshold - Baltic 21" we got from the Newsletter and from our teacher. In the summer 99 we got the materials-"Introduction to school works in BSP on the Threshold - Baltic 21". In this brochure there were many suggestions for what it is possible to do, and we had to make a choice of one of them. A few days later we've built a group from 8M class, we met and decided to prepare the subject of most interest for us, "Sustainable Fisheries".
On the first meeting we had very ambitious plans. We wanted to make a movie and a computer game about fisheries. After hard discussions we decided to prepare a computer presentation about the most important fish species in the Baltic Sea.
We went 3 times to the small town of Hel. Hel town has a fishery port. The town is situated on the Hel Peninsula. In Hel there is a Marine Station belonging to Gdansk University. The station consists from two big buildings and a "(Polish): Fokarium" - "Seal-quarium"- centre of breeding and rehabilitation of seals ("foka" is Polish for seal).
On the station we met many people who helped us in our project, especially Mr Krzysztof Skora, the man in charge. They told us many interesting things about Baltic Sea problems, fishing and fisheries. There are many works adapted to research and work on living and dead animals.
On Hel we made an interview with a fisherman, who told us a lot about his work, his ship and his methods of fishing. We went to "Koga"a fish factory. We saw a production process of anchovies, and we heard about further plans and development strategies.
A few days after this excursion, we went to MIR, the Marine Institute of Fishery in Gdynia. Scientists told us about amounts of fishing in our country. During the visit in Hel we heard about problems of the round goby in waters of the Gulf of Gdansk. We decided to present this for the conference in Sonderborg.
To sum up we can say that we have already made presentation in MS PowerPoint about the goby, and now we're working with other fish species. The members of our groups are now very close to each other. Working together taught us a lot. We're in the 8th class (last class of primary school), and our exams to secondary school will be quite soon. We thus don't have a lot of time for project work, but we like it and we have a great fun doing this. In spite of computer and other technical problems, we manage to go on with it. And it is only a pity that it will be our last group work. In June we split up and everyone will choose his or her own way...
